The PhD Program – Fully Funded PhD Research Scholar Positions in Norway
The PhD program at NHH is a 4-year fully funded program. That combines a comprehensive course component with related work experience and research, preparing the school’s graduates for research scholar positions at the leading international institutions and positions in knowledge-intensive institutions and firms that are outside of academia.

The preference will be given to those applicants who address their research problems aligning with the department’s research interests and the supervisor’s available resources (supervision resources).
Eligibility Criteria for PhD Research Scholar Positions
- Interested candidates must have completed a 5-year MSc (Master of Science) degree in public policy, economics, energy economics, or a related field. Their average grade corresponds to at least a B (4.0) in the Norwegian grade system.
- As far as the MSCA DN mobility rule is concerned, the candidates must not have lived or conducted their main activity (study/work) in the host institution’s country for more than a year within 3 years immediately before commencing the position.
- At recruitment time, they must not already possess a doctoral/PhD degree.
- The department requires the candidates to show an adequate level of proficiency in the English language. TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE Academic are required tests. Exemptions are available to those who are native English speakers, or those who have a qualifying master’s degree from any Nordic institution, or to those who have a qualifying master’s degree program where the language of instruction was English.
- It is strongly encouraged to demonstrate academic skills by submitting GRE or GMAT scores apart from the required transcripts of grades from previous education.
Financial Coverage
- These are fully funded PhD research scholar positions in Norway at NHH. The annual salary offered to the successful candidates will be NOK 565 000 (that is equivalent to approximately EUR 48 150 or USD 55 940) in line with the EU guidelines, including mobility payments and adjusted for special needs and family allowances, where applicable.
- For well-qualified applicants, a higher salary could also be considered.
- The annual adjustment will be a minimum of 3%.
- The candidate’s salary ensures a fair standard of living in Norway and will be subject to Norwegian benefits and taxes, including pension savings and public health care benefits.
