The purpose of the Hirsch Fellowship is to provide a travel grant for eligible researchers and doctoral students. It has application periods in the spring and fall of 2026. The specific application periods and details are normally announced by the KI Institute, with the spring 2026 call for applications starting 6th January 2026 and closing 20th January 2026.

The primary purpose of the grant is to offer funding for a longer travel period for the purpose of learning a new method. The grant covers travel costs and accommodation for up to six months.

The departure date has to be between 1st April 2026 to 30th June 2027.

Eligibility Criteria for Hirsch Fellowship 2026 in Sweden

  • Eligible candidates are those who are registered doctoral students, as well as researchers affiliated with a department at Karolinska Institutet
  • The eligible candidate is the one who is a doctor employed for a minimum of 2 years at a KI department, including surgical specialties, such as hand, jaw, eye surgery, of ear-nose-throat. KI will prioritize those who have their basic education from KI.
  • Priority will be given to researchers who have obtained their doctoral degree programs and are at an early stage of their careers.
  • It must be noted that usually one can only receive grants three times. If anyone has earlier been conferred with a grant from the foundation, the candidate will be asked to attach a research report with the current application.

Financial Benefits

  • Financial benefits (amount) will vary from year to year, but are often SEK 1,000,000 and thus, the offered (granted) amount can be quite higher. The candidates can never get more than they applied for.
  • Grants to be offered are paid for travel, accommodation, and other costs directly relevant to the trip. Funds will not be offered (paid) for accompanying family members.

Note: If the candidates have applied for multiple travel grants and have been provided with all of them, they may only be paid one of the grants.

Closing Date for Applications

Interested and eligible candidates are required to submit their applications digitally. The online form will be available through KI Prisma during the period of applications, i.e., from 6th January 2026 to 20th January 2026.

Required Documents

The following are the required documents to be attached to the applications.

  • A letter from the home department that confirms employment and salary situation during the trip
  • Project plan (carrying a maximum of 15000 characters) – approximately 4 A-4 pages
  • Invitation
  • Budget – a complete budget where indirect expenses (costs) need to be stated
  • One to two-page report if the candidate has previously been offered a grant from the Hirsch Fellowship
  • A letter from a supervisor is required for doctoral students confirming the purpose of the trip and the applicant’s role on this trip. An extract that confirms that the half-time review is complete, or an extract from Ladok needs to be enclosed
  • The applicants cannot add co-applicants to this call
