This opportunity namely United States Institute of Peace Scholarship is conferred to non-residential fellowships to PhD candidates who are enrolled in the U.S. universities and writing doctoral dissertations on subjects/topics widely related to peace building, conflict management and related security studies.

As for Peace Scholar Fellowship Program, it has provided support to 371 young scholars’ dissertations since 1998 – many of those scholars have gone to making distinguished careers in research, policy making and higher education.

The applications for the 2023-24 Peace Scholar Fellowship competition started on 1st September 2022.

USIP’s fellowship program partners with the Minerva Research Initiative to provide support to additional fellowships relating to the subjects/topics on peace and security studies. Presently, up to 18 scholarships are awarded per annum, and these awards provide support to both research and writing stages of work on dissertations.

For this program, the applications from the members of groups traditionally under-represented in the fields of international relations, security studies, peace and conflict studies and other relevant academic disciplines along with diplomacy and international policy making are highly and strongly encouraged.

For 2023-2024 USIP Peace Scholar Fellowship Program invites applications from PhD students with higher quality, policy related research. USIP highly prefers applications which are relevant to the USIP Issue Areas and/or Minerva Research Initiative’s research priorities.

Eligibility Criteria for 2023-24 USIP Peace Scholar Fellowship

  • Applications are open to PhD candidates enrolled in U.S. universities who have successfully obtained all of their required classwork and any required comprehensive examinations.
  • Non-U.S. citizens are also eligible to submit the applications, but they need to be PhD candidates presently enrolled at a United States university.
  • There is no age limit for applications.

Financial Benefits

As mentioned earlier that there are up 18 peace scholars funds for a 10-month, non-residential fellowship. The successful/chosen will receive stipends of up to $20,000 for the entire academic year. The amount will be paid directly in 3 tranches. These awards might not be deferred.
