Cambridge Endowment for Research in Finance (CERF) is pleased to announce a scholarship scheme for which applications are now invited. It will commence in October 2024. The funding, for selected candidates, will be for up to a maximum of three years and will include students’ university fees and maintenance.

Those selected for the CERF Scholarship will be expected to report on their research progress and actively engage with CERF by attending related meetings or seminars. They will also be expected to give the occasional research presentation.

Description Regarding the Call for Applications

Each year, the call for applications is announced and the deadline is set accordingly each year. The funding to be provided is for three years which includes college fees, university fees, and accommodation. An additional maintenance stipend will also be provided.

The CERF Scholarship Competition 2024 is open to PhD students within the University of Cambridge from any department who research all aspects of financial institutions, finance, and financial markets, and their relationship with the performance of the economy.

Students who are in PhD in the first year of their doctoral (PhD) or incoming doctoral students can apply for funding. As mentioned earlier the available funding is for 3 years and no money will be given retrospectively for any time already spent on the PhD program.

It is also to be noted that the CERF scholar might also be asked to assist (provide assistance) including providing support during events organized by the Cambridge Endowment for Research in Finance. The scholar could be provided office space in the CERF premises (subject to availability) and will be offered the opportunity to interact with other researchers linked to CERF.

Entry Requirements (Eligibility Criteria)

There are eligibility requirements for the University of Cambridge CERF Scholarship Competition 2024 which you need to meet if you like to apply.

The candidates should be PhD students within the University of Cambridge, from any department, doing research in any area (aspect) of financial institutions, finance, and financial markets, and their relationship with the performance of the economy.

The candidates have to be nominated by their PhD supervisor. The application form of the CERF Scholarship has to be received by CERF along with the nomination letter/email by 9th February 2024.

Copies of the PhD application documents of the applicants (including official transcripts and references) will be required. Applicants should ask their departments/faculty administrators to forward a copy of their PhD application to cerf@jbs.cam.ac.uk by 9 February 2024. Besides, if the PhD application documents do not have a structured project proposal, applicants should add it structured as follows:

  • Project title
  • Research questions to be addressed
  • Any work that has led up to the project, or prior expertise in the area
  • Research plan
  • Methodology to be used
  • Brief timetable and milestones
  • Sources to be consulted

Note: Reference letters are also required, and they should be sent to cerf@jbs.cam.ac.ukby9 February 2024.  The selection committee will consider the applications.

Funding Availability for CERF Scholarship Competition 2024

Chosen candidates will be provided with funding that will last for three years and include fees and maintenance. There is a maintenance stipend which is £22,000 for 2024-2025 (subject to review). Funding is only for 3 years and no money will be provided retrospectively for any time already spent on the PhD program.

Deadline for Applications Submission

The closing date for application with required documents submission is 9th February 2024.
