The available PhD Position in Machine Learning for Photocatalysis seeks applications from eligible applicants. Recently, energy transfer photocatalysis (EnT) has come up as a ground-breaking method for facilitating cycloadditions. Therefore, the reactivity and selectivity of substrates in EnT-catalyzed reactions remain challenging to predict.

This open project aims to address these challenges systematically by building chemistry-informed machine learning models for selectivity and reactivity prediction. Besides, this project is also a part of an international collaboration done with the German Priority Program on the ‘Utilization and Development of Machine Learning for Molecular Applications – Molecular Machine Learning’.

Job Description of the Candidate

Being a PhD student in its growing team, the candidates will keep developing machine learning methods to predict the reactivity and selectivity of energy-transfer-catalyzed photocycloaddition reactions. The candidate will explore descriptors for photochemical reactions, which then can be used by the models to generalize better to new substrates and reaction types.

In the group of Prof. Dr. Glorius, the candidate will be expected to make closely collaboration with the university’s experimental partners. Other responsibilities consist of contributing to the activities of teaching in the department.

Eligibility Criteria for the PhD Position in Machine Learning

A motivated and committed candidate is required who must be excited to push the boundaries of research in digital chemistry. Essential skills, experience, and characteristics should be:

The applicant must possess a master’s degree in either chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, computational science, physics, or related fields, or an expectation of obtaining such a degree before the expected commencement date of 1^st September
The applicant must have proficiency in English
The candidate must have programming experience using languages like Python, Julia, R, etc.
Ability to work independently, self-motivation, solution-oriented mentality are required

At least one of the following is also required:

The candidate should possess experience in applying machine learning from research projects or a thesis
The applicant should have experience in quantum-chemical simulations from research projects or a thesis

A desirable but not a necessary criterion:

The applicant should possess experience in organic synthesis from a thesis or projects
