  • You need to be a graduating Reed senior (spring/fall graduates are eligible), or you need to be an alum whose graduation date lies within 2 years of the application deadline.
  • You need to be a citizen of Canada or the United States.
  • You must be entering a graduate program within the time of a year after the application deadline for this program (fellowship).
  • Note: It is to be noted that the fellows who do not enter a graduate program within the year time after the application deadline for this program will not be offered funding and will no longer be taken into consideration as Edward B. Segel Fellows.

Eligible Opportunities for Reed College Edward B. Segel Fellowship for International Study

This fellowship (Edward B. Segel Fellowship for International Study) is targeted to support one year of full-time international study at a known (recognized) academic institution or program anywhere around the world, although there is an encouragement for recipients to spend the study year outside the USA and Canada.

Eligible Degrees for the Fellowship

It should be noted, if you are interested in this program, that any graduate degree is eligible as long as the course falls under (fits within) the eligibility guidelines.

Selection Criteria for the Edward B. Segel Fellowship for International Study

The selection committee will consider the following for the evaluation of applications:

  • Evidence of concern for involvement in issues of public life particularly international relations and foreign policy
  • The promise of future leadership in public or professional life
  • Intellectual and academic excellence

Note: Degree programs or graduate courses that have longer than one-year duration in length are neither advantaged nor disadvantaged in the process of selection.

Benefits (Financial Benefits)

The successful candidates will receive $50,000 in funding for up to two applicants each year so that they can get assistance with attending one year of a graduate school program anywhere around the world.

It is worth noting that any funds beyond the amount consumed (spent) on the program fees will be considered a stipend and belong to the fellow. There would be no further funding available, and fellows would not be able to reapply for additional (further) funding from this fellowship program.

The fellows should also note that they will be responsible for anticipating and paying any required taxes. Fellows could opt to get the funds in 2 payments or as a lump sum.
