About Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships Programs

In 2008, the Government of Canada had initiated the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program in order to strengthen Canada’s ability to gain and retain world-class doctoral students and establish Canada being a world center of excellence in research and higher learning. It was named after Major-General Georges P. Vanier (the first francophone Governor General of Canada). Through this program, highly qualified students of PhD are selected and study at the Canadian institutions.

Scope of the Program and Duration

Annually, up to 166 scholarships are provided to chosen students. Around (up to) 500 scholarships are active at any time. For details, you may visit the official website.

As for the duration of the program, it is 3 years which is non-renewable. The distribution of the scholarships is done equally among the three federal granting agencies namely:

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)

Eligibility Criteria for Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

If you like to be considered for the opportunity, you have to meet the criteria mentioned below:

Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and all international students (from other parts of the world) may submit the applications.
The applicants have to be committed to full-time studies.
The applicants need to possess research project experience.
English proficiency test should be provided, as it could be the requirement of the university such as TOEFL/IELTS.
